gowithYamo Presents: Kay Gasei's Black Box Series

Info

GowithYamo is pleased to present Kay Gasei’s Black Box Series, curated by Nathalie Brough and Lewis Swan. Black Box Series is the latest exhibition organised by digital art platform gowithYamo in partnership with artist Kay Gasei, on show at Coningsby Gallery from 25th - 29th May. A rising star of the London art scene, Kay won the Kate Bryan Soho House prize in 2021, and was recently listed as one of Artnet's ‘artists to watch’.

Kay Gasei is a British Zambian artist based in London. His work explores world mythologies and narratives, while also addressing contemporary political and social realities. Timeless spaces, filled by symbolism and recurring motifs, set the scene in Kay’s work, animated by a character named OD as he traverses stages in life from infancy to adulthood, acting out narratives that help Gasei understand his own intellectual and ontological journey.

Gasei commented: “The works featured in this show are the musings of the black box that is my mind. I’m constantly scribbling and doodling ideas, this show is a chance to showcase the thought process over considered and finished pieces”.

The Black Box Series offers an insight into the immediacy and spontaneity which are the signatures of Kay’s working process. Recurring influences and themes present themselves, including world mythologies, histories of people and cultures, psychoanalysis, social politics and the timelessness of cultural capital and philosophy. The artist’s dynamic and eclectic style utilises a montage of drawn and painted details, characters and spaces to create a narrative full of energy and surprise, whilst keeping an air of ambiguity and potential for viewer self-discovery.

The exhibition will include 7 large canvases, shown alongside 50 works on paper. 10 ‘prototype’ drawings will be available to purchase via The Auction Collective, with bidding starting at £100 and 15% of the proceeds going to the charity Patients for Affordable Drugs.

There will be a unique opportunity to see the artist painting live at the Coningsby Gallery at the private view evening, from 6.30 – 9.30 on 25th May. The event will be part of Yamo Lates: Fitzrovia 6.30 – 9pm, 25th May:  an exciting evening of late private views staged at 8 leading Fitzrovia Galleries, including Coningsby Gallery, The Fitzrovia Gallery, LUNGLEY Gallery, Gallery Rosenfeld, Rhodes Contemporary Art, Pi Artworks, VITRINE Fitzrovia and WORKPLACE. Created in partnership with gowithYamo, Yamo Lates: Fitzrovia will be a lively and social opportunity to explore the burgeoning art scene of Fitzrovia, fast becoming one of London’s most interesting and vibrant cultural destinations.
