Series 9: IWD Auction 2022: Philemona Williamson
Intro
Art on a Podcast returns for a ninth series, with new guest host Mollie Barnes of She Curates! This series will be focusing on artists from Art on a Postcard’s upcoming International Women’s Day auction, and we’re delighted to present the first episode, with special guest Philemona Williamson.
Based in New Jersey, Philemona Williamson “paint[s] figures depicting individuals of varying ethnicities inhabiting timeless, invented, dream-like environments”, and through her art investigates “the psychological landscape of adolescence, blurring the lines between race, gender, and class”.
While she has worked as an artist since 1988, in recent years Philemona has progressed from depictions of childhood and the transition into adulthood, in favour of universal, symbolic subjects. With narratives which seem to defy easy classification and interpretation, Philemona presents her work uncompromisingly on her own terms, making her a vibrant, exciting figure in the world of contemporary art.

Series 8: Winter Auction 2021: Andrew Salgado Art on a Postcard
In this episode of Art on a Podcast, Rosa Torr talks with Andrew Salgado about his work, art school, and Derek Jarman, plus Andrew gives an exclusive update. London-based Canadian artist Andrew Salgado graduated from Chelsea College with an MA in Fine Art in 2009, and is now regarded as one of the leading figurative painters working in the Uk today. Since rising to prominence, Salgado’s work has evolved from his signature large-scale portraits into abstract, narratively-driven paintings, still with a central focus on The Figure. With a keen sense of humour and self-awareness of his place within the tradition of figurative painting, with his work readily recalling Gaugin, Matisse, and Bacon. This interest in figurative portraiture is evident in the works created for the Art on a Postcard Winter Auction 2021, a mini series entitled ‘Authors with Big Noses’, featuring portraits of Virginia Woolf, Nikolai Gogol, and Derek Jarman. Since 2010, Salgado has had over fifteen sold-out solo exhibitions around the world in London, New York, Cape Town, Basel, Zagreb, Toronto and Miami. His forthcoming solo exhibitions include Four Seasons in a Small Room at Allouche Gallery in New York, and Tomorrow I’ll be Perfect at MAKI in Japan. Salgado has generously donated Lots 510, 511, and 512 to the Art on a Postcard Winter Auction 2021 to help raise money for @hepatitisctrust which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Bidding starts at £50 on each lot. Auction runs from 4th - 25th November 2021.

Series 8 - Winter Auction 2021: Iris Schomaker
Intro
Art on a Podcast returns for Series 8! In this first episode, host Rosa Torr sits down with Iris Schomaker, one of the artists featured in the Art on a Postcard Winter Auction 2021.
Born in Stade, Germany, and now living and working in Berlin, Schomaker studied at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design, as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen and Trondheim. Inspired by European artists such as Henri Matisse, as well as Chinese and Japanese ink drawing and wood prints, Schomaker’s figures lean heavily into abstraction, frequently captured in what she describes as ‘private moments’.
With colour only used sparingly, Schomaker’s subjects are presented in their simplest form, initially as pencil drawings, which are then translated into large-scale charcoal works. She later introduces mixed-media, with the final piece reflecting the varying stages of its own creation.

**Special Series** - Episode 3: Olivia Sterling - She Curates x Art on a Postcard
Intro
Olivia Sterling is a contemporary and emerging artist. She received her BA from The University of Derby, going onto study an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Despite only graduating in 2020, Olivia Sterling is an emerging artist already carving her niche in the contemporary art world. Sterling creates distinctive paintings that address questions of blackness and whiteness in contemporary Britain.
Sterling’s paintings present colourful scenes of madness and mayhem, using comic-book style outlines and to highlight an amalgamation of splayed limbs, all denoted by her ‘signature’ tagging of colour to indicate skin tone.
Blending pointed references like this into her depiction of ordinary scenes and subjects, Sterling’s work reflects on how we are confronted by racialised discourse everywhere in the everyday. By blending these tags into her depiction of ordinary life scenes and subjects, Sterling reflects on the racialised discourse that is everywhere every day. Sterling has exhibited her works at galleries across London such as the Cob Gallery and Guts Gallery.

Series 7 - Episode 3: Michael Scoggins - AoaP Summer Auction
Intro
The Art on a Postcard Summer Auction artist in question today is Michael Scoggins. In the episode Rosa and Michael talk about democratising art, elitism within the art world, connecting with your child in your creative practise and much more. Michael Scoggins is an American artist best known for his works on notebook paper which feign the attitude of a petulant adolescent doodling. Similarly to the works of David Shrigley, the artist utilizes cynicism, irony, and novice drawing.
Scoggins came to this style by revisiting his own childhood sketchbooks and realizing how disarmingly truthful they were in comparison to the paintings he had been making as an adult.
His alter-ego, a personality reminiscent of the Dadaist tradition, Michael S., presents the artist as an uninhibited child. Born in 1973 in Washington D.C., he received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. Today, his works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA, and the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, among others. Scoggins lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
